We are pleased to announce the publication of our collaborative article, Ethical Oversight of Data Science Health Research in Africa, in the New England Journal of Medicine’s AI journal (NEJM AI). The paper was accepted on March 27, 2024 and published in the May 2024 issue of NEJM AI.
In this perspective piece, we examine the ethical imperatives and governance challenges associated with the rapid growth of data science and artificial intelligence applications in health research across African settings. Drawing on expertise from epidemiology, bioethics, law, and clinical research, the article outlines key considerations for effective ethical oversight — including accountability, fairness, and community engagement — that are essential to ensuring AI-enabled research benefits populations equitably and responsibly.
As the field of medical AI advances, this work contributes to ongoing dialogue about how ethical frameworks must evolve in tandem with technological innovation, particularly in regions with distinct regulatory, social, and health system contexts. We hope it serves as a resource for researchers, policymakers, and institutional review bodies engaged in responsible data science and AI research across Africa and beyond.
