Two members of the BridgELSI team, Professor Shawneequa Callier and Professor Simisola Akintola, represented the group at the 6th DS-I Africa Consortium Meeting, held from 18th to 21st May 2026 in Mombasa, Kenya. Both are Co-Investigators on the BridgELSI project. Professor Callier is a faculty member at George Washington University, and Professor Akintola currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships) at the University of Ibadan.
The consortium meeting brought together researchers, innovators, policymakers, and data scientists from across Africa and beyond to advance the goals of the Data Science for Health Discovery and Innovation in Africa (DS-I Africa) initiative.
During the meeting, Professor Callier presented an update on the BridgELSI project’s progress, highlighting two key areas of the team’s work:
- Establishing a Governance Framework for Data Science Health Research (DSHR) — outlining the ethical, legal, and social considerations essential to responsible data governance in health research.
- A Systematic Review on Integrating Islamic Ethical Principles into the Governance of Data Science Health Research — examining how Islamic bioethics can inform and strengthen governance frameworks for data-driven health research.
The BridgELSI team congratulates Professors Callier and Akintola on a successful presentation and thanks the DS-I Africa Consortium for the opportunity to share this work with the broader network.
